Feb 28, 2018 @ 7:00 pm  —  Feb 28, 2018 @ 8:30pm

Presented by Seacoast Jazz Society in PMAC’s (Portsmouth Music and Arts Center) Haas Family Gallery and Recital Hall.

Allen Lowe is a saxophonist, guitarist, mastering engineer and music historian. He has performed and recorded as a leader with David Murray, Doc Cheatham, Marc Ribot, Matthew Shipp, Don Byron, Julius Hemphill, Lisa Parrott, Nels Cline, Ken Peplowski, JD Allen, Kelly Green, Ursula Oppens Roswell Rudd, Jimmy Knepper, Nicole Glover, Lewis Porter, and Loren Schoenberg. He has released at least 15 compact discs under his own name, and has three new works coming out in 2018. There are entries about him in the New Grove Dictionary of Jazz and The Penguin Guide to Jazz on Compact Disc. There is a chapter on him in the book Bebop and Nothingness, by Francis Davis (Schirmer Books: 1996).

He is currently a lecturer at Jazz at Lincoln Center, and is teaching a course there in the Fall of 2018 on the History of the Blues. His current projects include a suite of pieces called “A Love Supine: A Dixieland Love Supreme” (which his band is performing at Lincoln Center on February 20, 2018); and another suite called “Black Brown and Beige, Yellow, Trans, and Queer: My Country ‘Tis of This,” which is being performed at Firehouse 12 in March of 2018.
He has written a history of the blues, 1900-1960; a history of jazz, 1900-50; a book on jazz of the 1950s; and is currently working on a history of country music.

Blues historian Frank Scott has called Lowe “a Harry Smith for the 21st century,” and New Republic music critic David Hajdu has said, of his writing and history work:

“Allen is one of the most important music historians alive, an exceptional thinker who sees the entirety of American musical history with unmatched clarity. He’s unbowed as an intellectual, driven by neither vogues or ideology. His work taken as a whole is a monumental achievement. There’s no one better alive.”
