After losing their friend Maurice in a car accident, Morgan (Jordan Formichelli) and Vic (Shaugnessey Gower) struggle to cope with the hole he left behind. In an effort to honor him, the two seek funding to produce his final play, “The Dream Elephant,” with disastrous results. The play is terrible, but through their dedication it seems to hold a power over them – the power to make their dreams come true…if they can survive the ride. The play shows two people who get exactly what they’ve wished for, and two people who were unprepared for all that their wishes entailed. For in invoking the names of the dead for their personal gain, there may be more to the bargain than they both realize…
Memento Maury draws on cultural themes from Dante’s “Inferno”, to “The King in Yellow”, to “Over the Garden Wall” and Native American tales of the Wendigo in order to tell its story; the play is a wonderful piece which walks the line between black comedy and psychological thriller, all the while showing us two very kind and misguided souls trying to cope with the loss of their friend. It questions the virtue of having a legacy, discusses the fragility of our lives, and sheds a light on the impact even a small person can have in the modern world. It is a piece that I am overjoyed to bring to all of you, and we hope you’ll join us this summer at The Player’s Ring!
